Malaria ...

Some of the Kwando properties are situated in Malaria areas and therefore precautions are necessary. If you do not get bitten then you will not contract malaria. Therefore use the sprays provided, wear long sleeves and pants in the evenings and early mornings.

Bar, beverages and refreshment ...

All Kwando camps are fully inclusive and therefore there is no charge for any beverage, please help your self and enjoy. We have a fair selection of soft drinks, wine and spirits as well as tea and coffee.

Laundry service ...

All Kwando camps include laundry in your rate. However, please note that everything is washed by hand and ironed using a coal iron. Therefore expensive, delicate fabrics requiring special treatment are not suited to our laundry service.

Place your laundry in the basket in your tent and it will be returned to you by the following day. Please ensure that you have received all your laundry prior to departure.

Drinking Water ...

The water for the camps is sourced from the Kwando river, or a well point and is not chemically treated but run through a micropore disc filter system. The water has a green organic stain from the reedbeds. This stain is in solution and therefore cannot be removed by filtration only. Although the water is safe to drink, you may prefer the bottled water provided for your convenience.

Hot water ...

The hot water is from a LP gas powered heater system. This is very efficient but the trigger mechanism requires that you open the tap (faucet) fully to get a strong flow of water to ignite the heater. To regulate the shower you should open the hot tap full and cool it down with the cold water.

All Kwando camps have the hot water in the left tap (faucet). This is important at night as you will not be able to see the red marker.

Lighting ...

The camps do not have mains electricity. General lighting is therefore from paraffin oil lamps. However each tent is provided with a battery powered reading lamp in the evening.

Remember to turn this light off when not in the tent or else it will attract insects into the tent. This light should provide a few hours of light. You should leave the paraffin lamps burning during the night. There is a flashlight provided for each tent.

Communication ...

All Botswana camps are linked with VHF radio with a backup HF radio system.  The VHF system in Botswana is complex and supported by a network of high towers, relays and repeaters to link back to our Maun head office. The system is monitored fully during normal office hours and on weekend mornings. There are staff assigned to monitor after hours communications in the event of emergencies. Cell phones do not work in our camps.

Emergencies ...

All guests are automatically covered by a medical rescue policy that covers evacuation to the nearest appropriate medical facility (if hospitalization is needed then Gaborone or Johannesburg, South Africa). The policy covers evacuation, admittance and initial treatment but is recoverable against your own medical cover.

Lebala camp has a 24 hour link through VHF radio to Medical Rescue International in Maun. It is important to note that the airstrips are not lit and therefore night evacuation is not advised and is very seldom attempted due to dangers of animals on the runway. Maun and Victoria Falls are staffed with qualified paramedics who will undertake and coordinate an evacuation if deemed necessary.

Gratuities ...

Gratuities should only be given if you are well satisfied with the service and experience that you have received. Do not feel compelled to tip. Any currency is acceptable but please note that local banks do not change foreign coins. We do accept Master and Visa credit cards for gratuities.

Generally the guides and trackers are tipped separately and the rest of the staff participate in a pool. The camp manager will accept the tips on behalf of the staff and will distribute the tips among the staff if required. If you feel a particular staff member was particularly deserving then feel free to give specific instructions.

Shop Purchases ...

Of course you're also welcome to browse in our curio shops. The prices are generally shown on the items. However, do ask a staff member for assistance with conversion rates into other currencies (We accept EUR, GBP, USD, ZAR and BWP). We accept Visa and Mastercard credit cards only. If you purchase heavy or large items we can arrange for them to be shipped for you to a street address anywhere in the world. We normally send these items by courier as they are more reliable and faster.

If you require something that's not in the shop, please ask as we are sometimes able to get items to the camps in a day or so depending on flight movements.

Emergency Items ...

If you have left behind or run out of an essential item, please ask the manager who will have a supply of most essential items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shaving kit, deodorant and the like. If you require non prescription medicine just ask and depending on transport we should be able to get it to you.

Battery charging ...

Please ask the camp manager to arrange for charging of batteries for video cameras and camera as this can be done. It is advisable to have a battery charged while out on drive, so try to keep a full battery on hand and one on charge to ensure continuity.
