Upper Zambezi Trans-Frontier Conservation Area – fact sheet

We all know that the biggest risk to the survival of all wild animal species is related to being able to have viable populations and this requires large areas of significant bio-diversity. This massive project involves many different stake holders and role players.

Botswana

  • Okavango Delta – approx 1.6 m ha
  • Moremi and Chobe National Park – approx 1.6 m ha
  • Community/Private concessions in Botswana core – approx 3.0 m ha
  • Nxai Pan and Mgadigadi Pans Parks – approx 750 000 ha
  • Central Kalahari Game Reserve – approx 5.5 m ha
  • TOTAL approx 12.45 m ha

Namibia

  • Mudumu National Park – approx 85 000 ha
  • Mamili National Park – approx 32 000 ha
  • Babwata National Park – approx 300 000 ha
  • TOTAL approx. 415 000 ha

Angola

  • Luina Partial Reserve – approx 840 000 ha
  • Coutada’s – approx 6.4 m ha
  • TOTAL – approx 7.2 m ha

Zambia

  • Sioma Ngwezi Park – approx 500 000 ha
  • Liuwa Plain Park – approx 500 000 ha
  • Community areas – approx 3.5m ha
  • TOTAL – approx 4.5 m ha

Zimbabwe

  • Hwange Park – approx 1.5 m ha
  • Safari area nearby – approx 500 000 ha
  • Kazuma Pan Park – 31 000 ha
  • Victoria Falls Park - 23 000 ha
  • TOTAL – approx 2 m ha

GRAND TOTAL 26.6 m ha of already conserved land.

This would make it the biggest formally conserved area in the world. For example Yellowstone National Park in the USA is 0.9 m ha in extent and the Kruger National Park is 2.0 m ha including the private game reserves next door.
