Zambia became an independent republic under President
Kenneth Kaunda in October, 1964.
After 27 years, the people demanded change and an
end to the one party state. In October 1991, they voted the one
time jailed unionist Frederick Chiluba as their new President.
He remains in power to this day. |
The government embarked on an ambitious privatization plan through the 90s
with mixed success. The countrys huge copper reserves, discovered
in the 1920s and 30s, remain crucial to the long term success
of the Zambian economy.
In recent times, President Chiluba and his ministry have
identified tourism as potentially a huge growth area for Zambia and the
Zambian people. The inventory of incredible National Parks and wildlife
areas bears out the good sense of this policy. The outlook is very positive.
Zambia is one of the fruit and vegetable "baskets"
of this part of Africa, with excellent soils and high summer rainfall
in the rural belts.
In the south eastern corner of Zambia, lies Victoria Falls,
which it shares with neighboring Zimbabwe. Many people believe the spectacle
of the Falls and the less "touristy" feel on the Zambian side,
make it a vastly better place from which to access this wonder of the
natural world.
The town of Livingstone (named after the famous Scottish
explorer), lies about ten kilometers from Victoria Falls. It still boasts
some of the wonderful architecture of its grand colonial past. A visit
to the Livingstone museum reveals some of the fascinating history of the
town and the region.
Livingstone airport is a first class facility, a safe and
efficient step off point into the country.
Zambia is famous for its friendly and happy people. As a
visitor, you will be greeted warmly and treated well wherever you travel.
All the river and water based activities around Victoria
Falls, are available on the Zambian side of the Zambezi, including rafting,
wonderful fishing and abseiling down the gorges.
